Kso I finally used the multimeter and checked the voltage from the coil and I'm getting 6 volts from it then I took out the spark plugs and cleaned them all off cause they were all black and it still didn't turn on,still need help:\
is there fuel in the carb? does the fuel squirt out acellorator pump squirters when you move the throttle lever? does spark come out of the coil wire when you crank it with the distrubotor end disconected and held close to a ground?
Do you have points or an electronic distributor? If electronic, you can run a wire from the positive side of the coil to a 12v source, and the car should fire. If you have points, check the thick resistance wire from the ignition switch to the coil. It drops the voltage from 12v to 9v (in an ideal world). I had a bad wire, and it wouldn't even fire the coil. Check those out before you buy anything else. Good luck!
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=4445 Get one of these, it will help you in the future with spark issues. You can connect it from the coil to the cap and it will still light up to tell you if you have spark. Not sure if this is your problem but its helpful when determining these things.
Do you have a tach in the car? i know my tack was giving me trouble because it was not on right and would not start up ( i know its weird but if this is the problem...) Try taking it off if you have a tach (the wire going to the coil) May be a fuse also? Try taking the volt light to the fuse box and see what you get with the key on. if theirs no light, then their is your problem.
I am getting fuel to the carb and spark from the coil I got a electronic distributor, where can I find a 12v device I can hook it too??? And tryed to take the wire of the coild still no luck, also where is the fuse box in the car???? Does it matter if I switched the internals of the distributor from a 460 distributor??? Cause I also did that too
first answer Under the drivers side dash on the firewall second answer WHAT!:16suspect im no expert but i think thats your problem.
Did you ever replace all the ground wires and complete a chassis-engine-body grounding? Thats probably where your problem is, I had the same exact problem you did and replacing the wires fixed it. when you take all the ground wires off make sure you sand the grounding spot to all metal. Do the cheap things first, then work your way up to the expensive things, both wires together came to about $20 and took 15 minutes to replace.
Yep my broinlaw took the internals of the 460 distributor (just all the wiring and the armature) from it andmaybethat is it too but I'm still getting spark And I replaced just the ground wire to the engine I didn't know you can add another from the chasis to soleniod too ill try that and buy another wire is there a certain way it has to go on,on the solenoid???
I just ran a wire from the mounting bracket off the solenoid to the chassis...I wouldnt rely on the inner fender to have that good of a ground so I ran an extra wire just in case...I also added one from the chassis ground to the alternator bracket, and another one from the alternator bracket to the radiator support, all wires are nicely hidden so you can barely see them.
ok so you have spark and fuel. now you have to get it timed corectly. have you tryed twisting the distrbuter while cranking? when you put the distrbutor in, was the motor on top dead center cylinder #1? do you have the fireing order correct on the cap? did you rember to put the rotor back in the distrubtor? (ive seen that happen lots of times.)
Yes it was tdc with cylinder 1 and I'm going off a book that has the firing order from a mid size model cars I think 1976 to 85 or something like that,I've tried all those things yet its still not working yet:\
