any advice for these cold mornings? i put a larger battery in and she doesnt like to start in the mornin.
What is the problem? Battery not turning it fast enough, no choke on the carb, poor ignition? I have no choke on a 750 holley street hp, (way too much carb, especially at idle) and it starts with a little work on these cold days. But battery is strong, new spark plugs and Pertronix ignition with MSD to back it up. It will start with 2 pumps to the floor, and turn the key, but on really cold days, I need to hold the carb open to 1500 rpms (just above the idle circuit) for about 30 seconds. The idle circuit will not keep it running when cold. So did you get any of that snow yesterday?
I know with colder weather the carburetor needs to have a different Fuel/air mixture then it would with 100 degree weather, i believe changing it to have a higher air input is right but it could also needing more fuel. I would just mess around with the tuning first but you shouldn't have to adjust it much from what it is running now, and when it gets warmer just put it back to the way it was
X 3 ! :Handshake Both my Comet (Duraspark igniton) and my V8 ranger (Crane XR-1 ignition) are easy to start and idle after a minute or two with no choke whatsoever.
hook a voltmeter up to your batt to see how many volts it has before you start the car...hook the volt meter up to the starter(ground to the neg on the battery and power to the positive end of the starter cable) and if you see a significant drop in voltage i would replace your battery cables and starter cable and clean your main ground wire.
My truck is hard to start but I noticed after I adjusted the carb in my Comet it starts and idles very well in the morning. I am pleased. I also adjusted the "leaner" thingy on the side to a little leaner and it runs a LOT better.
still the 250 with one barrel. 750cca batt. still points. it starts to run then sputters out. normally it takes three tries before it'll stay running. recently 5 tries.
Switching to an electronic ignition would help big time then. I plan on doing mines tomorrow if I get the chance since I recently received my Pertonix kit from JCWhitney.
Pertronix is the bomb. It will start much easier regardless of the weather. Actually, anything to replace the points will make it start and run better.
It's a thing on the side of the carb that says "leaner" on it with an arrow. I turned it a few degrees toward leaner and the car runs a lot better. Gets better mileage too it seems.
