I STILL have a drivetrain vibe and HOW do I get it fixed?

I will just get under the car this afternoon, drop the shaft and measure the caps.

It is 1.125" +/- what? Is it supposed to be dead on?

I would guess it would be, since they have to be pressed in on some applications.

I sure hope this is the problem because that would sure make an easy and cheap fix. I am betting it is, because the guys that did the balance and put the new u-joints on had no idea what car it came off of, so they are probably the same size all around.

U-joints on my '72 need replacing. Anyone have a source that will supply the correct joints?

I hope it is too. Like I said, if it is, I can promise you the two caps held in by the u-bolts will be bad already. Needles will probably be destroyed as they can't last long when the cap is wobbling back and forth.
Do you have a stock rear end of have you changed to a 9"?
I think that's where my problem came from. My 9" takes a different cap size than the factory 8".

still running stock 8", and stock drive shaft.

If I find a part number today, if I have to replace them, I will post it here.

And just cause it's tight doesn't mean it isn't under a load. Needs a good visual of it in hand.

    GREAT CALL, Ray!!!

    :dance::dance::dance:

Not sure if it will fix all the noise, but Ray was right. The caps were really sloppy in there, and only measured at 1.065".

Off to O'Reilly to find the correct joint!

OK, part number for front joint is 280

Rear joint was a 280 also, for the + and the 2 small 1.063" caps that go into the shaft, then I bought a 434 and borrowed 2 1.125" caps for the yoke, and it all fits perfectly. Now for a test drive.

Thanks, everyone, for the heads up and part numbers to make it work. I'd have been exchanging u-joints with many trips to the parts store.

Am I reading you right, to replace both joints I should buy 2 280s and one 434 and swap caps? If that's right, I guess I'll have parts left over to make a spare front joint? Just noticed a new O'Reilly's store here. Guess I'll pay them a visit.

My 74 took part numbers 369 and 430. :hmmm:
Best to take your old part anytime you buy a replacement

There are several part numbers that fit. Depends on the store, brand, etc. They were also looking at 255, and something in the 300s. But the ones I bought were the ones listed above, and they do in fact fit and work.

Buy 2 280 joints, one 434, and take the 2 non-grooved caps off the 434 and put on one of the 280s.

the 434 was just the first one I saw that had the 1.125" caps. The center + part is larger than the 280, so with my parts, you will end up with 3 caps and a + going into the trash. So if you can find another part number with the same overall length and the 1.125 caps, then you could end up with two complete sets for the rear after swapping caps.

Oh, test drive was not a success. I only got it to about 30 mph and now I have a NEW problem.

Even though I did not hear the resonance during that short drive. So THAT problem may be fixed.
