ok need a filter for my maverick when i get her running right and i was looking at the K&N x stream on jegs. which one of the assemblies that they have would give me a 3 in element and fit over a holley 4 barrel that came off an 80's mustang? confused on the measurements that they have on there page. http://www.jegs.com/p/K-N/K-N-X-Stream-Air-Flow-Filter-Assemblies-Tops-and-Elements/747887/10002/-1 there is the link if it helps i was think it would either me the 3010 or 3050 thanks
The 3060 fit under my stock hood. I was using a performer intake, holley 4160 and one inch spacer the spacer was needed to clear the duraspark distributor.
Doesn't have anything to do with a hoodscoop,if that's what you're trying to show, it has to do with upsetting the laminar air flow into the carb boosters. Those lids are very thick and they intrude into the area just above the carb and upset the flow.
On mine its 3 1/8th from the top of the rear booster to the top of the filter. The lid is 7/8th thick and intrudes 3/8th. Pics: http://s902.photobucket.com/albums/ac229/alex289
well i totally thought i saw a powerblock show on it and it increased the horse power with a 4v but still i order a 3020 which is a 4in element so i really dont think 3/8ths will make a difference and with a scoop on the hood i think it will suck lots of cold air
LOL, if you saw it on Powerblock it has to be true! There are several threads on SpeedTalk where they discuss testing these lids on engine dynos. More times than not they lost power. Joe Sherman mentions every time he has tested them for customers they lost power. One engine builder did back-to-back tests within minutes of each other, the K&N lost 15 hp compared to a domed steel lid. Another guy says he witnessed dyno tests at Westech where they were testing the lids for a magazine article. The K&N lost power and the magazine guys were not allowed to print the test results. Obviously it's your money, you can spend it however you want. I'm just trying to provide additional information.
Whenever I get a chance to do some dyno runs, I'll bring my steel lid and compare. I'm curious myself. I would think the scoop would make a difference too, certainly seemed to, but that could be all in my head...
If you do test, let us know. I suspect that if you have a really tall filter it won't matter, but that's not the case with most cars trying to fit the filter under a hood. 'Course if you have a really tall filter with a lot of surface area you wouldn't need a filter top anyway...
Yeah, the scoop was the only reason I wanted to run the filter top. Seemed like the simplest way to seal the breather to the scoop without an elaborate tray setup.
I went with the xtream mostly because the new manifold is taller making me go from the stock 2" tall filter to a 1" one for hood clearance. I would be curious though what it loses in power and why, because i could squeeze a chrome cover on it and force the flow through the smaller opening.....
