Saw this from the freeway on the way home a few weeks back. Couldn't stop to get pics, but today, it was there again, so i pulled over and took a closer look.

Thought you guys would get a kick out of this.

It is called the California Special. Not sure if it was a package deal from a California dealer, or just something some guy put together on his own.

It was very nicely done, albeit a bit over the top, but pretty much period correct and the craftsmanship and quality was A+.

Sorry for the cell phone pics. I didnt have my hat cam with me tonight.

The dark brown areas were heavy in metal flake, but I don't think you can see it in the cell pics and low light. I have no idea where he got the blue dot lights.

Very "period correct" but a little too 'artsy' to be a dealer package I think. Can't see a Merc dealer pulling off the hood emblem filling the holes and adding a jet ornament as part of a special package...

the name of the strip club is Heartbreakers, and right behind it, a church put up a sign saying "Jesus Heals the Broken Hearted".

Moved it here with a closeup of the other sign.

    Well, it's different.

You can get those blue dots on ebay. You just drill holes in your lights and stick them in. My dad put them in the tail lights on his Comet.

California Special Mustang emblems, lake pipes, metal flake halo top, rainbow stripes, hood jet and mags.

    Naturally I love it.

Oh Dave, you never disappoint! I'd lose the lake pipes and enjoy it.
    Red leopard interior and all.

Personally, I don't usually like this much...this much...let's call it "personality" in a car.

But this person did a good job at keeping it all flowing together. So, yes, it is gaudy, but it is ALL gaudy and it all matches.

Even had a suicide knob on the steering wheel!!!

I was young when this car came out, but I remember seeing many done up just like it back then (I actually lived in SoCal back in those days, mom drove a 69 vette and dad drove a van all carpeted out, loud paint scheme, 440 dodge with headers and 4bbl, etc. towing a jet boat with 454 in it. So my family lived THE 70's).

But you seldom see them survive to today. So seeing one done back up like they did it back then shows that the person has some ingenuity, a little extra money, and has a sense of humor and is willing to put it all together into a crappy ole comet.

So when I saw this car, I felt like I was back in "the day" and wanted to share those pics with you all.

It would also be cool if we found out who owns this thing.

That hood ornament looks like the bird on a 1955 chevy.
