do i need a different throttle cable for my 1975 mav? it had a 250 in it and it will have a 302 in it with a factory ford holly 4 barrel. i have searched this subject out on this forum and there are conflicting answers. any help would be appreciated.
...just figure out a different mounting bracket. The V8 bracket mounts to the intake the 6 cyl bracket mounts to the block.
There is a differant throttle cable for a 302. You can get one still at a parts store. You can not use a 250 throttle cable on a 302.
My car had a 6cyl throttle cable on it until recently. It works, but I didn't like it. I had to put a bigger return spring on it than I would have liked, so the pedal wasn't exactly "crisp." The extra length caused it to be looped around too much. When it started to bind up I'd have to put an even stronger spring on it. When it bound up on the way to a cruise-in and nearly took me through a red light with my three year old in the back, I replaced it with a universal cable from the parts store. I don't remember if it was a Mr. Gasket or Spectre, but it works very well. I was able to put a much smaller spring on it, pedal has a very light feel now.
I too used the 200/250 cable. I don't like it, it makes the pedal pretty stiff, no extra spring used. What auto supply are you getting stock 302 cables from?
interesting, i couldnt get the right stock cable from napa, Kragen, auto krafters..... then i had to modify two of the aftermarket (spectre and lokar) ones to make one good one that doesnt come apart while driving down the freeway. must just be me?
No, I couldn't find one either, and yes I did have to modify my aftermarket cable, probably for the same reason you did. I forgot about that. The pedal end of the cable snapped off way too easily when I was adjusting it for WOT. (I need the pedal to be at WOT just when it hits the floor, not before, because I have this "nerve condition" that causes me to forcefully stomp the bejebus out of it several times a day...) Anyway, yeah, the end came off, so I took a short bolt, two fender washers, a lock washer and a nut, I drilled a hole through the side of the bolt just large enough for the cable end, and I tightened that sucker down. I'm kinda glad it came apart when it did, 'cause now I know it's solid.
