Most of us pay around $300 from someone who knows what they are. But I have seen entire explorer engines with P heads on for $300 at the junk yard. So heads alone should be cheaper.

Be sure they are GT40 and not GT40P. 3 stripes on the ends, not 4 stripes.

They're 40 per head here, but most of the fox body guys pick them up quick. :(

And it's, what, '96 models that have the GT40 heads? Or is it '97?

I think it was mid-97 that they went to the P heads.

yup, mid-'97 and up are "P" heads. found a '97 in a local yard once and thought i struck gold untill i seen the 4 lines  but i could have still bought the engine that was running/driving with 140K for $400

Check for the number of stripes on each end, then to verify, there is a P stamped on the Ps, and GT stamped on the GT40s. But if you can see the stripes, you will have it nailed.

Cleaner heads in this pic for comparison.

Here is the main difference, and why the Ps don't work well with headers.

Ps are on top. Spark plugs come almost straight out of the head. End up hitting the header tubes.

You can see the GT stamp on the bottom one, and the P stamp is in the same place on the P heads.

Here is the driver side GT40P head with the header mocked up so you can see how the spark plugs DONT fit. In that second picture, there is no optical illusion or bad photo angle. Those spark plugs are touching the header right in the middle of the header tube.
