I went to pick up my rear bumper from the chrome shop and drop off my front bumper to be re-chromed. I had two sets, a 71 set and a 72 set. Im not sure if anyone knew this but I just noticed the 71 set of bumpers do not have the two bumperets nor do they have the holes in the bumper for it. Im guessing that 72 was the first year they started using them on our cars?

My information says the bumper protection group was an option in 71, which included bumper guards.

The bumpers in all years came both ways - with and without the bumper guards and holes. If the dealer installed them for a customers order, they would just drill in the mounting holes themselves. This was pretty routine as the guards were a popular add on at the dealer level.

Yes, optional - and sometimes the dealer didn't drill clean holes either. Sometimes you can tell if it was a dealer install.
