What cfm 4bbl carb ???

    1972 Maverick 2 door.Original V-8 3 spd std shift.Also a 72 one owner Sprint sporting a 351 Windsor
    Get a Holley 600 vac secondary carb but...Get a 4150 model with a secondary metering block and replaceable jets.The 4160 has a jet plate,you cant change jets on em W/O changing the plate.Get a quick change scondary assembly(if the carb doesnt come with it) and a set of secondary springs too, so you can adjust when and how much the secondaries come in.

    the bigest cfm i would get is 700 cfm. the 750 has idle circuts in the secondarys. if your motor is to small and a 302 is, the 4 idle circuts are to much for it. the smaller cfm you use that can feed your car to its red line will give you the best perfromance.

    Some 750's only have front idle circuits like the 3310 which is a great carb but I say 600 CFM is all that is need on most 302's unless it is pushing 7k.
    I would also go with a Holley because I know how to work on a Holley.
    An Edelbrock will be closer to running OK out of the box but I am all about tuning. I can't tune an Edelbrock for crap. I can tune a Holley so you asked we thought and liked.
    Make sure if you buy a new Holley to get one that has externally adjustable floats. Your engine is pretty stock so I also recommend a vacuum secondary with the quick change kit. I mostly think of a mechanical secondary as a race type carb though I know a lot of people run them on the streets.
    I run an 1850-600cfm vacuum secondary carb on my mild 460 and love it

    I have 4 Edelbrock 1406's on my 351's and they are all plug and play. No adjustment problems, just great action. Before I bought the Edelbrocks, I had a Holley 600, nothing but problems and never could get it adjusted right. Bought a 750 double pumper and it was too much fuel. Took them off and have no problems since with the Edelbrocks. I will put a 1406 on my 302 when I get to that point. I would never recommend Holley to anybody.

    Of course, my driving is cruising, no racing. But, when I need to punch it, they perform well.

    I run an Edelbrock 500 cfm. (1404) mounted on a 289 performer intake. This carb and intake gets me 20+ mpg, starts with the touch of the key, and has crisp throttle response.

    What ever you buy, Get it NEW. Don't buy someone elses problem. If they are selling it cheep there is a reason for it. You have to ask you self If it worked so good on there engine why are they selling it.

    I always wanted to try an Autolite 4100. Bought 2 but couldn't get the throttle plates free. I had a Speed Demon and loved that thing. Great running carb.
    I have a Holley 1850 that is 12 years old and been on 3 different engines. It is on my 460 now and once I tune it for the engine I never have to touch it again. Holley Street Avengers I hate. Bought one and the base was warped. Returned it and that one was also. The next one was as well so I got my money back and rebuilt my trusty 1850 and been running it since.
    Holley usually do need to be tuned. I bet most Edelbrocks do also to get the best peromance and economy out of them. It might run fine but who says it can't run better?

    Have you ever taken any manifold vacuum measurements at WOT to see how much of a restriction that carb is to your big block?

    Not on the 460. I understand what you are saying though. I tried a 3310 750 vacuum sec. on it for a while. Did a lot of tuning to it also. It had a better top end but not by that much of course that was just seat of the pants feeling. The bottom end is much crisper with the 600. 90% of my driving is local back roads. I might go a month without hitting the interstate. Most of my loads are a 5x10 trailer load of wood and it doesn't even know it's back there. I might pull a car for a friend once a year or two and it does that very well. I guess I am more concerned with my low end response. Not to say that when I open her up it will still get it done. lol
    I left a light the other day and punched it at about 25 and it got squirrely.
    Couple of friends are trying to get a field trip to Mooresville Race track before they close for the year. If we do I'll put a vacuum gauge in there and see what it shows.
