I believe they were actually slotted between the mustangs and thunderbirds. Maybe when it failed mercury started copying ford more closely.

Absolutely!!!!! Comet's are worth more because they are a Mercury product. Everyone knows Mercury is a step up from Ford. Guess you could say Mercury is the luxury model.....:thumbs2::victory:
I wish they were worth more.....:rofl2:

Condition really is the deciding factor....screw the blue book or whatever.
All mavericks are not the same....so to ask if a maverick is worth more than a comet cannot truly be answered; because it depends on what particular maverick/comet you are looking.

I would say the maverick is more sought after; Cause IMO, the comet front and rear is really an acquired taste.

A car is only worth as much as a buyer is willing to pay for it. This has been discussed time and time again when prices come up. I don't know of ANY instances where there has been ANY Comet that has sold for some exhorbitant price. I have seen many Comets sell for similar prices but I truly believe the Maverick will always bring the higher prices simply due to the odds of there are always more of them for sale. I pick on the Comet guys all the time but if the truth be known I would love to have a nice 71-72 Comet GT. I wouldn't give up my Grabbers or Sprint for one but I would own one in a heartbeat (never know when you'll need extra parts)
Seriously though, it all depends on a buyer to bring value up on a car. I am a certified auto appraiser. Our appraisals are based on what that car (similar ones) have sold for in the recent past. Our company (Auto Appraisal Group) keeps track of cars being sold all over the company and keeps them in a computer database. When I send an appraisal report in they plug in all the info I give them and find similar cars that have sold within the last year or so to help give an accurate value on the car. Anybody can say "my car is worth $10,000" (example) but unless a similar car in the same general condition has brought that much in the past then they are simply full of crap. EBay is one of the best sources of value available to us today. You can watch auctions to determine values of pretty much anything. Of course there are always a few cases of people getting carried away and paying outrageous prices for certain parts/cars. I've been on both ends of that one. That does drive prices up. Just look at what Barrett Jackson has done to the muscle cars...same thing.
Bottom line...buyers set the price...not the seller...not necessarily rarety although sometimes it helps.

    [QUOTE=brainsboy

Comparing cougars and mustangs isnt fair. Keep it in the same body line and less usually equals more
"S" coded mustangs are worth more than a more popular 428 cobra jet. Why? because they made less than 50K of them.

Not necessarily so. I agree with Dan. My son just sold a concours quality '69 Mach 1 with a 390/4spd for under $30K. If it had been a 428, it would have been 5-10K more, provided there was a buyer out there. Right now is not a good time to sell any car. 390 cars are not worth as much as a 428 one.

As to the comparison of Mustangs to Cougars, they shared the same platform in the first generation of both. They made many times more Mustangs than Cougars even though the Cougars were more optioned. The Mustangs today are worth much more. So, numbers have nothing to do with value. The Mustang is more popular because there are more out there and less expensive to restore. Having restored many of both Mustangs and Cougars, I can say from personal experience, it is much easier to deal with the Stang. Many Cougars were scavenged for the benefit of Mustangs, so even less exist now. I am currently putting together an XR7 conv that my son and I have been working on for 7 years. Many parts cars have contributed to this project because parts were not available from parts houses.

You have to really like cars like Cougars, Falcons, Mavericks, and Comets to want to restore it, because the end value will usually be less than the cost put into the restoration.

Some special models of Mavs or Comets, such as Sprints, Grabbers, or GT's might be worth more because of their rarity, but for the most part both are similiar in value. My observations.

Well said. The appraiser makes a difference in the value as well as the owner. Take for instance the gentleman who did my appraisal. 80 years old and full of car knowledge but completely lacking in modern pricing like Ebay examples. I tried to get him to look at Ebay sales but he doesnt see that as a value he can defend to an insurance company. Thats OK for this year. The car isnt finished yet so the 3 rating is justified.
Next year I'll do some research into the appraiser when I have it adjusted after the interior is finished. Dont mind paying for a good appraisal next year. The insurance is stupid cheap even at 10000 appr.

Early 80's Capri's were built along side the Mustang. Would you give more for the Capri with the same options only because fewer were made? What makes our hobby (69.5-77 Comet / Mav ) owners different, is that we respect/love the cars for what they are and who we are. We love the car for whatever reason- body style ( My fav.), how light it is, memories ( another fav.), and the people we meet along the way that keep this alive (MMB-----no not an advertisment).

Build what you want.......forget the resale value if you are doing this because you like it. If you want to buy cars to make money go somewhere else if that is the only motive. This board is for those passionate about their cars and hobby.

i agree 100% it all depends on the car,but i feel in a collectors standpoint the comet would be worth more due to rarity(if the two cars were in the same condition)and im not justa sayin that because i have a comet. dont get me wrong i wish i had a grabber everyday:thumbs2: and i agree the mav is more sought after, but in my opinion the comet is a fancy aternative

I sense alot of jelousy here.
    :rofl2: j/k guys!
What I really do see here is alot of valid opinions.
My opinion is that Comets SHOULD have a slight edge, but it really is up to the persons personal choice so far. I have a GT and a Comet for instance, I wouldn't have a Mav tho. Nothing wrong with them. I just happen to have been raised with a Comet in the family. To have a Mav to me means sell and buy a Chevelle. But I have Comet in my blood and the Chevelle is a dream.
See? It's all opinions any way...
