take the horn pad off (two phillup head screws), unhook the horn, take a ratchet w/ extension and 15/16" socket and removed the nut holding the wheel on. once it's removed, you can buy a puller for this for about $15-$20 or just simply pull from one side then the other side (going back and fourth) untill it free's itself. hope this helps
the best way is to buy a steering wheel puller.... LOL No I am not kidding. Years ago someone told me that and I thought they were BSing me and I asked them if a steering wheel puller was anything like a board stretcher or a sky hook..heheehehe, turned out there really is a special tool called and steering wheel puller.. and it looks like this. in some cases if you buy and elcheapo gear puller it will have the extra bolts included and you can use the gear puller to pull a steering wheel.
if you are not re using the wheel and feel like being super cheap you can leave the center bolt on (for safety) then take a rubber mallot or your meat hammers(hands) and smack it towards you. NOT THE RECOMMENDED WAY!! LOL!
maybe that's why when i put the horn pad on the horn sticks... and the guy i bought it from had a kinda flat nose... j/k.
I saw can't find that one cause one I baught doesn't fit our pattern where do I buy the puller from post #3
my local advance keeps them in stock. any major parts house should have them (advance, autozone, oreilly's, checker, etc...) i have also used the one for harmonic balancers as well.... but i mainly just pull like hell (post #2)
Want a huge piece of advice? Make sure you put the leave the nut on a few threads if you yank on that wheel by hand. It stops you from smashing your face when the wheel pops off. Seen a few guys smash their heads pulling on a steering wheel. Its funny as hell but I bet it hurts. My apprentice did it on a new Caravan. He also succeeded in ripping the clockspring in half. Sometimes his hands are a bit ahead of his mind.
Sometimes what works for me is to take the center nut off then put it back on a turn or two, loosely, then find a bolt that fits in one of the threaded holes on either side. Then I use a claw hammer. I screw the small bolt in a bit, then put it between the claws and pull up gently using the center nut for leverage. Might have to switch sides after pulling on one for a bit, but it will let go without too much effort. I don't like to use my hands for this because I will bend the steering wheel every time and can never get it quite round again.
is your universal the kind with two claws or does it have a large center with an assortment of bolts?
large center with assorted bolts doesnt work though cause the angle the opening in relation to bolts is off
the center doesnt look like the one posted before (above)? if it has a big center bolt and you can get one side bolt in snug, you can then tap the other side with a rubber mallot or your meat hammers and keep snugging up the other side as it loosens.
Yeah my Advance down here had a Rent-a-Tool program, cost me 20 bucks and I got it back when I returned it, yours should have the same program (and the tool they gave me worked fine)
