The C4 is just your basic 450 HP strip and street build. 5 clutches in the direct pack and 6 clutches in the forward pack. all the drums and hubs are machined true, drilled for cooling, and the direct drum is textured to grab the band a bit better. The governor was reworked so he can drag race in Drive - with the transmission shifting more consistently than he can. Rebuilt pump modded for gear lubrication, stator support modified for better cooling and converter filling. Pressure lube to the #9 thrust washer and more lube to the rear half of the case components. The valve body is a stage 3 - no neck snapping shifts - just tire spinning. It will shift so quickly that he will have to run the slicks he has to make necks snap! Look for about .1 second off his best time - maybe more with the slicks. This C4 was purposely set up with more clearance than a street transmission so there would less drag. It has all the other things that all my C4s have - all new bushings and thrust washers and of course, yellow paint. The "Ugliest transmission you will ever love". We spent a total of 22 man hours working on getting the old one out and the new one back connected to the engine today. Thats what happens when two guys - who shouldn't be doing it - work with one arm and a bad back. Coop is going to soak his shoulder tonight and I am taking muscle relaxers and pain meds. Have to get some rest so we can finish it tomorrow. (I only worked for 10 hours.... Coop did 2 hours more than I did and a lot while I was nursing my back.)
Sounds like a great day! Remember how much easier this was when you were young? Paul sounds like a great transmission you built. How much do these sell for?
Just got a call from Paul. He's not going to make it over today. He's just to sore. His back is killing him. I'll try & finish it up today....
Well, I was under the car, for another 4 hours today. Got it all buttoned up. Took it on a test drive. I get rubber in 2nd gear. WooHoo!!! I no sooner walked in the house, from the test drive & Jimmy2gates called me. Told me I could use his mechanic this Saturday. He was sorry for the mixup. I told him that it was Okay. Would've been nice to have some help. But, got it done. I'm on the road again. Thanks again PaulS... Looking forward to a test & tune at the local track....
How do you like your new trans? Someday you will. When you get that V-8 installed. Put a 2500 rpm stall converter in it. You just might get rubber in 2nd gear....
My C4s start at $750. That gets you a transmission good to 350 HP - under most any street use. For one like Coop's it runs about $850. If you need one that works with 600 or more HP - full roller thrust bearings replacing the normal thrust washers and a hardened input shaft it will run close to $1200. If you want an all out drag transmission that will stand up to 1000+ HP then the price jumps to $3000 and up. The worst part of my pricing is that I make about the same no matter which transmission I build. The added cost is in parts and machining. I much prefer building transmissions for those of us who use them on the street - whether it is a daily driver or just a weekend cruiser. I like to see folks who enjoy what I build, as opposed to the racer who uses it as a tool to get quicker times - and little else. I know Coop will enjoy the transmission, on the street and at the track, that's just the kind of guy he is. I don't ship my transmissions - I just build them for local folks. I become friends with my customers and get to know what they want and need to make driving a fun experience. Several guys here on this site have "YellowTransmissions" in their cars. I have had nothing but good feedback from all of them. They're a great bunch of guys.
the issue with shipping to far away places is if there is an issue(real or imagined) it is impossible for you to know what happened.... People try to get over on others all the time
Drove the car to work today. Works great! I just had to manual shift it, to get the tires to chirp in 2nd gear....WooHoo!!!! It is an ugly (yellow) transmission, but I love it!!!!
You stomped on me the other day when I said something simular :16suspect Glad to see you got it all worked out. I sure wish I could get one like you got.
Ah but you can just takes money. I got mine from Broader performance, I have used it for 3 race seasons so far and not a problem. Real nice guy that runs the show. http://www.broaderperformance.com/C4 trans and parts.htm
Yep, If I couldn't build C4s I would buy from Jay at Broader Performance. His transmissions have most of the same mods - on some points we have different mods but I have only heard of one person who wasn't satisfied with his work. Jay does ship his transmissions so you can get them delivered almost anywhere. but he doesn't paint them yellow!
Have to admit, if I ever get a leak, the yellow will show the red fluid easily.... Makes finding leaks a breeze. Hopefully will never see a leak....
