so a while back i posted in the tech forum about pushing in the clutch and the motor in my comet was dieing. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=53121&highlight=push+clutch+engine+dies so i put a new trans into the car tonight and the problem went away. so i think that it had something to do with the trans. any one have any ideas what in the trans could cause this problem? i'm going to pull the top off the trans later this week and see if i can see anything wrong and i'll let you guys know.
This would be my guess. Pressing down the clutch pedal and the linkage movement was hitting a wire and grounding it someplace. When you swapped the tranny the shorting wire may have been moved around or disturbed and the problem has been adverted for now. Problem may come back - it may not.
Strange things happen with ign. parts. I had a Ford Ranger that would die every time you tried to put your foot into it. After alot of "Fun" we found out that the kickdown lever was rubbing on a "small" section of bare wire and shorting the system killing the engine until you let off on it. Good Luck! Don't loose too much Hair over it, that will happen over time anyway!
you know i thought that too but there is no wires down near the linkage and it wasn't like it would just die. you could tell something was dragging on the motor when the clutch was in. so i don't know what it was.
maybe the cluch was burnt to the pressure plate thus stalling the engine just a guess but when you said you could hear it dragging that was the first thing i thought of. did you smell any thing like burnt fiberglass or any weird smells.
My advice from experience. Dont over think it just be happy its all good now. Stuff happens and when it stops happening park it fast before it comes back. Ooops sorry thats at work?? Glad to hear its all fixed.
i didn't smell anything like a burining clutch. so i'm just glad it stopped doing it. i was thinking about it today at work and last night was the first time in a long time it was running really smoothly. so i don't know what to think. well hopefully i can get it done before the end of the month. the city is on my case for having a non registered car in my DRIVE WAY! some times i don't know about some of the stupid regulations around here.
Did you replace clutch when you put new tranny in? Improper pressure plate fork adjustment (factory set on most) will do that.
no i didn't replace the clutch when i put in the new trans. but my car isn't factory it's gots parts from here and there. it was working fine i was driving it one day and it just started to die when i pushed on the clutch.
in your drive way? WTF!!!! next they will tell you you cant restore a car in your garage only park there in an operable vehicle. Stinking politicians.
Be Happy you don't live in some of the townships in Maryland or Virginia. I have seen it on the local new that certain townships and even smaller, some developments ban it's residents from parking pickup trucks, REGISTERED OR NOT in your own driveway. If you own a pickup truck and want to keep it at your house it must be parked inside of a garage or you can be fined for parking it in your driveway where it is visible to the public. These places consider pickup trucks low class and an eye sore. LOL I bet you think I am kidding don't you? I'll try to look it up and post a link to an article if I can still find it.
here's one in Texas non-the-less http://blogs.automobilemag.com/6287...driveway-by-homeowners-association/index.html here is another one that the court of appeals overturned http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/31/us/31coral.html I could continue to look and find some more but you get the Idea
