now that my car is near finished, what could i do to protect her from thefts. all i have is a st. wheel club, no alarm or anything. should i make some sort of secret under dash ignition switch off or something? it has to be my daily driver, i dont want anything to happen!
Hidden kill switch that will take out the starter. That way no one can jump the solinoid and turn it over let alone hotwire it.
Nothing you can do to stop someone from stealing it if they really want it. Somebody got my neighbors '68 Chevelle with a roll back. Security camera caught them loading it up but didn't get the tag number of the tow truck or a face to ID the bad guys.
A mechanical fuel shut-off that is hidden is another item that you can add. If it has a carb and they get it hot-wired, it will run for about two blocks and then the carb runs out of fuel. Probably enough to make them panic and leave. Another good addition to cars that do not have remote hood releases in the interior, is either locking hood pins, or run a short length of chain from the hood down to where you can padlock it to the radiator support. Keeps your battery and other stuff under the hood from getting ripped off. All these measures will stop/slow down amateurs. If a pro really wants it, they are going to be harder to stop.
first you seem to think this car is worth something to someone besides yourself.. could someone do a search and see how many'70-'77 Mav/Comets have been stolen in the last 20 years... be prepared to have your feelings hurt if you think (1) or more has been... i only remember (1) and it turned out to be a scam... ......
Wire a switch into the neutral saftey switch, and hide it under the dash, that the easiest way. Plus get yourself a simple car alarm, anything is beeter that nothing at all, the flashing light goes along way, and find a way to lock your hood.
a guy i worked with had a $400 system in his car..one night someone swiped his radio...then he got a $1200 system...it had a beeper that came with it to beep when the alarm goes off. well...he was sitting at a ballgame and the beeper went off. he ran to the top of the bleachers in time to see his car going out the gate...when they found the car 3 days later, it had no tires and wheels, sound system or scecrty system... ...he had more in the new sound and alarm systems than what the car was worth... ......
Agree that if someone really wants it they will get it. I think a mulitple of items, fuel shut off, alralm hood locks will help. Don't go too fancy on the alarm. My friend had a state of the art alarm that changes codes all of the time. His truck was stolen and was found at the mall. Some teens had stolen it and was joy riding in it. Turns out you can get a decoder from Radio Shack which can detect the codes. The cops told him to switch to another type of alarm as this is the latest trend.
I read somewhere on the internet where a guy put a photo copy of his drivers license and a note inside each wheel stating if the person who is getting new tires is not the person in this photo call the police...these wheels have been stolen. Sure 'nuff...someone stolen the new wheels and latter tried to buy new tires and the tire guy found the note inside the tire and called the cops.
I think when I get my Maverick close to where I want it to be I will put good Classic car insurance on it with an agreed upon price on it. Going to do the same to my F100 the next payday. If one is stolen and not returned at least I will get what I think it is worth. clint
something i did was modify the hood latch so that u cant open it from the outside w/o pulling a cable inside first. i posted a thread a while back about it.
i rigged up my own alarm yesterday,i bought a cheap train horn from auto zone,it was $30 and loud as hell,i wired it up to a switch i plan on putting in plain site and it'll have a indacator sticker under it that say's "start" so if someone try's to steal the car i get woke up lol,you could also wire it to the dome light or to an alarm....
I was going to my car after work the other day. A woman was walking next to me when a truck driving by honked it's EXTREMELY LOUD TRAIN HORN. I think I came about 3 feet off the sidewalk. It turned out the woman knew him and that's why he was honking. She told me he had installed a train horn in the truck. Something like one of these: http://www.hornblasters.com/products/category.php?id=8 The post above reminded me of this.
