if you put a roller cam in a non roller block you need a custom cam with a redused base circle. this will get pricey. if your just looking for 200hp you should be able to get there with just the carb intake a mild hydrolic flat tappet cam, and dual exhast. dont need to port the heads or use headers to get 200 hp.

Or use Crane's lonk bar lifters and the std base circle rollers for the 5.0's. Either way will set you back 600-700 dollars once you're done.

Ooooo kay. In that case, no roller cam. Thanks for setting me straight. Headers are in the budget and and porting won't cost much. Guess I'm working on the PLUS side of 200.

i strongly recomend new valve springs matched to the cam you use. valve springs wear out and you start loosing horse power on the top end. so if you want the most of your build up get matching springs for the car you chose.

When you swap in a roller cammed head onto your flat-tappeted block, change the springs.

Otherwise you will level out some cam lobes in the near future.

    Hmmm...wonder how I know this....;)

Bryant, yep, new springs are in the plan. Will match new springs with whatever cam I buy.

Scooper, I've given up on roller cam based on previous posts. Are you saying springs are an issue with flat tappet cam with E7 heads on '72 block? If yes, do I need something special in springs?

I know I can't use flat tappets on a roller cam. Other than that, seems like the issue with springs would be too much lift, regardless of cam type. Am I missing something?

e7 heads were on roller camed motors. roller lifters are heavyer requireing a heavyer spring rate. that heavyer spring rate is to much for a flat tappet cam to survive under.

one more thing. e7 heads use pedestal mount rocker arms not stud mount rockers.

OK .... got a feeling there's something I need to know here. Can't I use the rockers that are coming with the heads and are shown in the picture? Not sure what you're telling me. Jim

oh and be careful on the exhaust side of the E7TEs... when porting too much or with the wrong blend you can actually lose flow... the intake side is a lot more forgiving

OH S**T!! There AREN'T any rockers on the heads!! :banghead: Now I get it. Thanks for the heads up. Will start locating some pedestal rockers. Any chance my '72 push rods and pedestal bolts will work on the E7s?
