I need to find bolts for a 1971 c-4 transmission, my brother found the specs for them as 3/8x16 1 3/8 long, its a weird length, and I was wondering if someone knew where I could get them from. I've been told by a fastenal shop, and hardware stores that I should get 1 1/2 inch bolts and grind them down, but wouldn't losing the tapered end screw up the threads in the tranni? Hope someone on here can help me, my e-mail is Edge710@aol.com. Thanx.
If I had to buy 1 1/2 bolts, then I would just add a washer to make up the 1/8 difference.worked for me.
buy the longer bolts and a nut for em.Put the nut on the bolt and run it down then cut off what you dont need and remove the nut(it will clean the threads)on its way off the bolt.repeat process with all the bolts and your good to go.
i bet the 1.5" bolts will work. the threads are in the block not the transmisson. screw them in to the block with out the transmission and see if they thread in far enough to clamp down on the trans. also make sure you get grade 8 bolts. if they dont go down far enought then a washer and lock washer (wich is not a bad idea anyways) will do the trick
Yep, bell housing to block. Now if he has a pan fill case where the bell bolts to the case or case fill where the bell bolts to the pump, then 3/8's are used. Would help if he was a bit more descriptive of his situation etc. Betcha he is talking about the pump bolts and they cannot be any longer than spec's call for.
Sorry bout that, I shoulda been more specific, it's the bolts the hold the bell housing to to the main transmission case. Not sure how, but they were lost at some point.
