I know it is a tight fit but if I want a 351w in my car without shaving shock towers, what manifolds do I need, I know I'll have to grind them down. I may have a free running 351/fmx from a car over at my grandpa's that i'll put in there. untill I can get my 302 rebuilt.
I stuffed a 351 in my 71 Maverick,,, I got rid of the FMX trans,, Not a very good Tranny,, at least in my experience,,, I used the factory exhaust manifold from a 1970 Ford Galaxy with a 302,, and did a little grinding,, The engine was shoe horned in but I did not have to shave the shock towers,,, The 351 was fun,,, But I ended up building a 347 Stroker and went lighter in the front end,, 351W weighs a bit more then a 302,, and unless you are getting a 1971 or older 351,, I would prob stick with the 302,,, the power to weight ratio is still better with a 302 with some miner upgrades,, Like using the 351 heads,, If they are actually a 2.02 intake, The amount of work involved did not yield what I thought it would,,, a good C-4 from a V8 car is still a good choice,, the difference in a I6 and V8 C-4 is the V8 has 2 more clutches in it,,, you can upgrade a I6 trans with the extra clutches,, just requires a trip to a tranny shop for the V8 spacer,,
do you think that these would work http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1970...rQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_500wt_1077
Folks on the forum say that stock Maverick 302 manifolds work on a 351w. I have heard of others fitting with plenty of grinding, but there are so many versions out there that it would be hit or miss. You have to remember that our cars have the engine closer to the firewall than other Fords of the time. Also, use a C4. The effort to get an FMX into place is just not worth it. It's a big, heavy trans, and our cars were designed only to take a C4 (or equivalent manual tranny), unlike other Fords from that time, which had adjustable crossmembers and such. Just use all your 302 parts... Tranny, mounts, stock manifolds, pulleys, etc... You'll just need to bring a 351w front sump oil pan, distributor, and intake manifold to the party... That's it. Without shaving the towers, it will be uber-tight! It won't stop you, just cause you to pull your hair out a little more than you would with a tower shave.
I doubt it. They're for a 302. When you get to the Maverick you need to be specific as to a 302 or 351W. They usually don't interchange.
would an fmx even fit in the tunnel, because I think my grandpa said that is what it had when I bought it from him
It is correct. The FMX should fit the tranny tunnel of any Maverick but the 70. It might fit the 70 as well, but I am being cautious as they had a smaller tranny tunnel. It has been many years since I swapped C4 for FMX, but IIRC, the FMX uses a different crossmember placement. If so, you will have to custom make a crossmember to put an FMX in a Maverick. I also seem to remember the driveshaft being a bit too long when going from C4 to FMX.
Its the sprint I purchased a while back. The towers have been "relieved" with a BFH Its not pretty. As for the headers I have no idea...wish I did. They have been "massaged"...poorly by the swap gorilla who did the job but they are in there.Thats the nicest thing i can say about em.
looks like they may have been too massaged and have no flow left.... hard to tell from this angle. also you may want to put some shock tower braces on that baby
i ended up using a bfh on my towers and had plenty of room if your not too concerned about how it looks then that works great.
I have the export braces.I left em off while I was doing exploratory surgery on the sprint...yes the headers are massaged too much in a few places and will be going after I finish my blue mav. Bartikus... A bfh is for knocking ball joints loose not for trimming shock towers.I have my work "cut out" for me with this one.
