I have two of these. Unfortunately neither is black. I have some Fusion black plastic paint which has worked well so far but what is the best way to paint this piece and keep the chrome (Plastic) rings? I've thoght of pin striping tape. Also perhaps vaseline applied with a cue tip and just rub the paint off after. Any otheer suggestions?
You could try some liquid mask.(should be able to find it in a good hobby store) other wise careful masking(which may pull up the crome) or as you stated vaseline. Good luck!!!
Vaseline should be nowhere near paint. Try using tape that is designed to come off without pulling on paints etc... Might find something at a hobby store for models. The blu painters tape comes to mind but it's too wide. Maybe you could repaint the silver afterwards...
Auto body supply houses (maybe even O'Reily's) carry a 3m vinyl striping tape that comes in various widths. It's nice and bendable. I've used it as small as 1/16" wide, but 1/8" in your case would work perfectly. Run the tape on each side of the chrome the come back and run a piece right down the middle.
Lol! Yea, but too tedious for me. I have seen the pinstripe size at hobby stores. I say get that and go ahead and get a small Testors bottle of silver and a couple of brushes. Might need thinner if you want to save the brush. If your real good you can redo the silver on the heater panel.
Paint the whole thing your color and use silver pinstriping tape over the edge of the bezel. Example here. You might (or not) want the inner "surrounds" of the openings to be flat black... Russ
I didn't have to paint the bezel in my car ... but the silver trim was kinda beat up. I restored mine using a Chrome Paint Pen used for plastic models. With a steady hand it will look factory.
If you are willing to paint it try these guys http://www.alclad2.com it leaves a nice looking finish.
Wow thanks guys I am off to Hobby Lobby to get some pin stripe tape and see if they have the chrome paint pens. Thanks a lot
LOL! Caution!! Don't start looking around! I go there and get all kinds of ideas. They have some neat stuff.
that sounds like the answer to me paint it black then come back with this CHROME PAINT PEN.....IMO, that sounds easier than taping it off, cause you know you will have a "O-$hit" somewhere
