I swapped my pads out with top-dollar (for O'Reilly) lifetime warranty ceramic brake pads. I think they are called ThermoQuiet or something like that. They immediately started to sqeal, but I hoped that they would "break in". They never did. These things stop ON A DIME!!!! Great stopping power, but they squeal at low speeds and just as I come to a stop. Anyone know any way to get this to stop (pun intended )?
Have the rotors swirl cut/finished. I have the exact pads, no squeek. What I did was I took a 80 grit sanding pad on my grinder to my rotor and ran it accross the rotor as it spun on the lathe. I been doing that for a while now and it has reduced the squeels on nearly all the jobs I done regardless of the pad type.
This also workes quite well Scott.Put a piece of duct tape on the backside of the pads.Just cover the whole thing and trim it to remove the excess.Disc brake quiet on a roll!!!
So, the duct tape just absorbs the vibrations that cause the squeal? Sounds like an easy fix. Will it affect my braking? I don't want to lose the firm and abrupt braking I have...if I have to, I will just go back to the cheap pads.
You will not suffer any ill effects or rashes from this proceedure.Yes to your first question...if you put the pads on used rotors that will explain the noise.the rotor surface looses its "tooth"(roughness) which is what allowes the new pads to "bed" wear in so they dont squeak.You can scuff them up with a medium (brown) 3M roloc type cookie too if you have a small die grinder.Dont go nuts! just wave the thing around the surface a few times to put some coarsness back into it.this cuts the glaze off and allows the pads to bed.Use the duct tape,its the least time consumeing.
Done the cookie trick many times also. When I don't have any I swirl them on the concrete driveway till I see freshness.
Silent... Worked like a charm. I used 2 layers of duct tape on all pads, and not a sound... Thanks for the awesome suggestion
YUP! took each pad off, put two layers on the back, cut to trim off the loose ends, reinstall, and silent. Doesn't seem to have affected my stopping power either. I will use duct tape on the back of ALL brake pads from now on.
I do a lot of brake jobs for friends and I have never heard of this before. I will try it in the future.

Dan, I have never heard of it before either, but it works! All you really need is a little insulation between the parts to absorb the vibration.
that...and i buy the ...yellow stuff... in the little pack that you cut the corner off and squeeze it out. you put a little on the back of each pad. it's on the counter of most auto parts places...$.99 is this...high speed or high temp duct tape... ...Frank...
