Best time to check trans fluid-cold-hot-running?

    I have been told to check it when it is running.

    I have been told to check it when it is warm.

    I have been told to check it when it is cold.

    Which is correct?

    1972 Maverick 2 door.Original V-8 3 spd std shift.Also a 72 one owner Sprint sporting a 351 Windsor
    Operating temp... in park or nutral.I say either or, since some are one way or the other.It should actually say on the dipstick.Check hot idling in park OR Check hot idling in neutral.

    Yep. I've always understood it should be checked when hot idling in park.

    Yep, with everything at normal operating temperature, shift the trans through all gears, then shift to park and check it.

    I know this is correct, but when I read it I just got a funny mental picture :D
    Car running, put it in drive, jump out and chase it down the road trying to get to the dipstick :rofl:
