I'm not sure how to resume the previous thread which stated the valve cover off my 73 Comet 200 cu in was caked w 2 pound of wet sludge. That's all cleaned up now however on reassemble I see that one of the valves is stuck wide open so that the push rod falls to the side. Possible causes include 1. moisture has gotten to one out of twelve, 2. engine was over reved while priming carb when there was a crack in the gas line so that the gas tank was emtpy, 3. varnish and deposits Has anyone ever heard of a valve sticking open and how do you unstick it or is it game over? It only burns about 200 -300 ml of oil per 1000 miles.
when one of my intake valves was WO i hit it with a wooden block to get it loose again. but later i found out that a hex wrench was holding it open and when i got it loose the wrench split the piston and block.
Valves stick open due to the following: 1.Valve is bent 2.valve guide is worn and valve is cocked in the guide 3.Carbon build up has glued the valve open 4.Valve spring is broken and no longer holding valve shut You can whack it with a dead blow hammer or a hammer and a block of wood to loosen it up.Once its loose turn the engine over by hand a couple of revolutions to be sure it opens and closes. Then do a compression check on the offending cyl at the very least to verify it is seating and not bent.good luck.
