Hopefully there will be more to learn provided God doesn't smite my Maverick this weekend. Even then, there ought to be a good story.
I have had several vehicles where the needle went past 'F' if you topped off the tank, but if it pegs all the way to that side, yeah I'd agree that something is wrong in the dash, either the gauge or the regulator.
Well it's been quite a weekend. Fixed and improved a bunch of stuff on the Mav, including the fuel guage. Wanna guess who was right? (Hint: Not me.)
Yep. I got a cluster from a junkyard since I was pulling a bunch of other stuff anyway, and I figured I'd try the regulator since it was the easiest first step. That took care of it! Other results of that junkyard trip include properly a functioning turn signal assembly that I don't have to hold down anymore. And Friday I got my reverse lights working... Luxury! It almost takes the fun out of it.
I have been following this thread with interest because it sounded an awful lot like the way my gas gauge was behaving in the Grabber (using a random instrument cluster grabbed from parts box. Original one? No idea. ). Well this last Saturday I was out running errands after getting tags on the car, and on the way home taking off from lights it acted like it was not getting any fuel. I got about a mile down the road before the car died and would not start back up. Fuel filter was empty. Gas gauge on half tank. Long story shortened to took truck and trailer to get car, added five gallons of gas -- just in case, car started at home on the trailer. Gas gauge reading almost full after adding the five gallons. I replaced the IVR today, whaddaya know, it reads 1/4 tank! Guess I ran out of gas afterall! Had I known I was almost out of gas, I would have stopped at one of the 15 gas stations I drove by that morning!
Yeah, that's just how mine was acting. That adventure on the side of the road at the end of this story is a result of that. It's gonna be nice actually knowing how much gas in in the tank. Until now, basically I knew if I could see the needle at all I had about a day left. Half a tank and I just might be walking...
I'm glad the v.r. was the problem. I'm not having the same luck on my mustang the only thing that's left is gage replaced everything else. Now whats the prize for the right guess. I'm thinking Memphis BBQ.
