I have a '72 Mercury Comet GT. I'm not sure what's going on with it. While accelerating, about the time I hit 30 mph,it starts cutting out. Then I ease off the gas a little, it's fine, so I have to kind of baby it up til about 50 mph and then it runs fine. It's a little worse when climbing, like a freeway on-ramp. Is this fuel pump or fuel filter related? A retired mechanic I know told me that, from what I described, it sounded like the accelerator pump in the carb was bad. Any help is appreciated!
its like $3. it screws into the front of the carb and then the fule line plugs into the other end of it check the pump for leaks. both my cars had leaky fuel pumps that i had to replace. which is also really easy and the pumps were only a little over 20 bucks
not in tank the filter is right in front of the carb, small 2 inch circluar piece, just follow the fuel line into it you cant miss it
Okay. This is great. I'm stopping at the parts store tomorrow on the way to work - I'll probably have to wait until after work tomorrow night to put it in. You all have been very helpful. I'll let you know if it works. Thanks, Debbie
Check your puel pressure. If you have fuel pressure it isn't the pump or the filter. With a 72 I would bet that you have a clogged pick-up sock in the tank and lots of debris in the tank. First - blow the sock off by blowing air from a compressor into the line where it come out of the frame . Just disconnect it from the pump, take the gas cap off, and blow air back into the line until you hear it "POP". Then mount a large filter between that line and your pump. Prime the carb and start it up. If that doesn't fix it then it is probably a timing problem.
sounds like a carb. prob. to me....it runs up to 30 mph then rough to 50MPH and then fine. doesn't sound like she needs to "blow her sock off" just yet. changing the filter is always a good place to start (on any motor problem). "the accelerator pump in the carb." would be my fix. granted we may have to ...clean tank...blow out fuel line...replace fuel pump...replace fuel filter...rebuild carb...tune up...etc.etc. but for now let's..keep it simple...JMO ...Frank...:Handshake
