Well. My D.S.S. 331 is on its way. They shipped it today. It is the Pro Bullet 331 with Stud main girdle and windage tray. Has 13cc dish pistons that with my AFR 185s 58cc chamber will give it a 9.55:1 compression ratio. It will get a Comp Cams XE274 HR roller cam and an Edlebrock Air Gap manifold with a Holley 650 DP on top. It's gonna murder the T-5. They say around 420 HP Cant wait to get it in. It's replacing the thing that will not die. the original 302 built in late 71 now with ported 69 Windsor heads an old school hydrolic flat tappet cam and other things everybody does to make power. It makes about 1-4 PSI oil pressure at warm idle and 35-40 at full tilt.... It still runs hard but the perpetual oil leak from the rear main was bad. 6500 RPM power shifts and many hot laps on abandoned country roads failed to kill it so I will acknowledge defeat and retire it intact. The heads will go to a good cause... My friends 67 Mustang. They will fight another day...
Sounds awesome. The only thing I can be nagative about is why use on off the shelf cam. Spend the extra few bucks and het one ground by Cammotion. Best damn cams for fords. I just got mine last week Solid roller .604 lift both INtake and Exhaust. The duration was 245 247 Should thump

Good cam choice It's pretty close to the Z303 I have in my 331 (with 1.7 rockers) With the 3x2 high rise dual plane, the powerband comes in at 1500 and pulls to 6500-7000. Depending on what you want it for, you might want to consider a lil' bigger carb for the topend.

DSS makes good engines a few guys around here flog on them Still stick to the cam deal. I just can't see spending that kinda money and not getting the most out of it you can. Just the racer in me and not the Accountant
How much did that custom cam cost you? That plus the lifters? Hard to beat a cam that only costs you $115. That's what I paid for the Z303.
Did you get it used? I have been using an E303 cam for years and payed at least 165.00. I installed New Ford Hyd rollers as well at the time and paid 110.00. I'm not dissing on the alphabet cams. Just saying I would never fool around and build a "real"(open to interpration) motor with out a custom grind. The Cam I ordered was 330.00. Worth it to me to get all that I want. The lifters I have not bought yet, Another 200.00 or better I am sure. I just seen to many engines dynoed and the custom cams always out performed.
I bought it new in the box, second hand from a guy like you. There are lots of these around, especially over on StangNet.com (classifed section) who run off buying new stuff then get conned into buying more expensive parts and sell the first parts for pennies on the dollar. And my 331 is just as much a "real" engine as yours is. I don't need a mega-grind, solid roller that allows spinning it to the moon to make the power where I want it. That kiind of build recipe simply is a recipe for a block failure. If you're going to build it like that, you're better off starting with a better block first. You DID do that didn't you? I mean, hell if you're going to go all out, why pinch pennies?
The block I am using a Dart all alumium 5800.00 no pennies pinched here. :Handshake CHI heads and intake. 347 all aluminum clevor. Purpose built. TKO600 Road race Tremec.
The XE274 HR is the cam that seemed to be the best compromise. It gets a lot of good press from different Mags and engine builders as one of the best cams for a 331 with my mods. I almost went smaller but it has a 112 Lobe sep with decent duration. I wanted the car to be highway and long distance capable. The old 302 has a flat tappet .510/515 Lift. 232/234 Dur. On a 107 lobe sep. Quite a bit of bark. Gets around 16 MPG highway in 5th with 3.70s. Hope the new one gets around the same. I was thinking of trying a Holley 700 or 750 vacuum secondary carb. Got a hydrolic clutch kit too. Should be way better than the modified aftermarket cable monstrosity I have now. Hey Limeade, What does your Mav do in the 1/4 mile? I am hoping for 11 second capability. Might need more gear in the rear. Going to set mine up as a compromise between road and drag racing. I like both.
With the 306 roller it has ran a nest of 12.58 I am hoping to get in in the mid 11's with Head work and the cam change/valve train. SOme day I hope to get the all aluminum 347 Clevor MONSTER in it. However since that is gonna take some time and I want to enjoy the car some between here an now and I am optimizing the current motor. Personally I have ran better with smaller carbs. We run a 650 on my brothers 331 which is real close to yours. We used the comp cam 272 grind. Protopline heads and a 650 Mighty Demon. I am expecting mid 11's outt of his. I am droping weight as well. Hence the all aluminum motor. Fiber glass bumpers, Mustang II etc......Purpose built
