How much is too much.

I wanted to get a idea of how much money people were spending on their mavericks and if it ever ends, My 75 project seems to be costing a small fortune and im doing all the work, I dont think ill ever get out what im putting in,I suppose keeping it and enjoying it superceeds the cost......

 

There's not many hobbies where you put in a lot of money and get it all back. There's just a lot of hobbies where you put a lot of money in and add more and more, hoping you get some enjoyment out of it.

I have $15,000 plus in my Grabber ...

 

I put alot of money and time in my old 64 Ford 4x4, but it sure was and is fun to tinker with. Now I bought this Maverick and now the maddness of late nights and empty pockets has started again.These old cars and trucks give me and my 10 year old boy some good daddy and son time and my 15 year daughter when she has time for me.

 

And, that's not counting your man hours. Put your hourly rate at work to the hours you have in the car and you'll say "Holy (fill in your own word)!"

 

True ... but Hobby hours aren't charged at the same rate as work hours ...

 

I have seen the price of these cars going up,, and as they become allot more in demand and harder to find. Now that parts are becoming available the cost of restoration will be coming down,, NOS parts can break the bank some times,, My Stallion is a bank buster because I want it 100% OEM, The other ones are allot diferant,, The rear bumper to have rechromed for the car in my avitar was $600. We are making new ones for around $200. just one example, Chroming a set of Boomerangs $100. each,, a set of new chrome composits $99.95 a set. Soon I can see the cost of restoration coming down about half the cost by late Summer if your doing your own work.
Some of the new reproduction parts cost less then some used parts.

I bought the majority of the NOS parts on my Grabber around 7 years ago before I even had the car ..... I was collecting parts for another car that I eventually abandoned. If I were having to build this same car today ... it would probably cost me at least an additional $7K ... probably more ... especially since I only paid $2200 for it back in the good old days 5 years ago.

 

I just over $23K in mine and other than upholstery, I did it all my self. I dont expect to get anything back cause I'm going to be buried in it.

 

When I think I have had enough, I will then pull the intake off and put on that 6-71 blower...

In other words, I will never reach the point where I have spent too much. This car brings me too much pleasure to say "I need to stop when I reach $XX,XXX.XX!"

I currently have around $6000 in mine, parts and materials cost only.

The memories of my first race, the wife's first burnout, my first engine swap, my first botched head porting job, etc...they are all priceless (hate to use that cliche ). I cannot put a price on the junk-yard adventures that the wife and I go on, finding rattlesnakes bigger than my arm when looking for a rear valence. Having a cold front roll in and rain on us as we run the mile or so to get back to our car, etc. There are few things that the wife and I really enjoy doing together since our other hobbies are so different.

 

I think if I tried to add up whats in mine I would quit working on it!!! You cant put a price on having alot of fun! plus it keeps me out of trouble!

 

For the first few years I owned my car I kept EVERY reciept ...I mean If I bought a can of spray paint and some hose clamps I kept up with it . I`d just put them in a box (still have them from 1983)But finally after about 10 years I stopped keeping anything but the reciepts from the bigger purchases made. I`ve always said that I don`t care how much I have in the car because it will never be sold (Passing it on to my son when I`m gone.) and its been my Interest and hobby for 25 years.
I can tell you that my car still has not been restored cosmeticly. It needs Paint , weatherstripping and rechromed bumpers ,along with the front seats need re covering. I have not yet spent $12,000 on the car....But if I`d spent $30,000 I would not care.
