Is it easier to drop the engine in with the headers already attached, or wait until it is almost dropped all the way into the bay and then put them on?
Go ahead...try installing it with the headers on...let us know what you think. Really Scott, I couldn't imagine how it could be done, but i'm sure there has been someone . I bet it was a pita if it was done.
I bet you can change out the engine with the headers on several times a day if you loose the towers...
start putting the motor in.....about a few inches up from the mounts, then bolt the headers up (once you clear the steering box, etc. etc.) then finish dropping the motor in. I have done it this way a bunch but I had the tranny mounted to the motor.
I figured that since I had to install the headers by jacking the engine up off the mounts, and they were very tight going in that was as well, that I would have to do it that way again. But I saw a picture of someone hanging a motor with headers over the engine bay, and wondered if it could be done ahead of time.
I was going to disconnect my motor mounts, use an engine hoist and lift the motor about 6 inches and try that.
Scott; just a take the mount bolts out, one at a time, and jack the engine up on one side. Put in the header (passenger side from the top, driver side from the bottom). Easier than using a hoist, and I've never had a problem.
i do like earl said. i get the engine in and everything lined up first. my passenger side goes in with the engine still bolted in but i pull the drivers side bolt and lift the engine a few inches.
I did both Hedmans from below with the engine raised as far up as it would go. Car was also on jack stands about 1" off the floor. They both went in like butter.
