I have ordered brake hoses for my Mav. From what I see 2 go in the front and one in the rear. The rear one is puzzling to me for this reason. I see a brake line going to the hose from the master cylinder. The rear hose is roughly above the rear axle towards the driver side. Then at the rear brake hose I see where it splits of to brake line again to each rear wheel. Where it splits I see this third hose going up into the frame and nowhere near a wheel. Where does that 3rd hose go? What is it for?

Would you bother replacing all the metal brake lines if there is no sign of trauma or leakage?

    Again thanks a ton.

3rd hose should be the rear end vent. Not a bad idea to take it off an blow through to make sure not plugged or you can replace.

Depending on what all your doing to car on replacing steel brake lines. I've had numerous lines break after putting back on the road. Good idea to replace, once running down the road an they fail,,, not many options at that time

when you ...ordered your hoses, there should have only been ...
    (2) front.

i myself have never had a "hard line" to fail. (6 mavs./comets)

what repair of the rear brakes are you planning..(new shoes, wheel cyl.)?
if you replace the ...wheel cyl....take extra care... undoing the fitting from the back side. (it can be a boy dog).

That is because you are down south. :D

Around here (the rust belt) it is pretty common to have to replace the brake lines due to rust on the OUTSIDE. I have replaced lots of lines on my cars due to that reason.

Did you actually find someone with the rear brake hose? I recently checked with O'Reilly and Autozone to try to find a new one and neither could get it for me. I wound up taking one from one of my parts cars that was still in good condition and using it. The front hoses are available with no problem.

Like stated in post 2, it's just a vent hose for the rear end. It has nothing to do with the brakes at all.
