i found a 351 cleavland for $500, the problem is that it has been sittin out in the weather for 6 or 7 years. would it be ok still and what heads would be beter: the cleavland heads or the gt40p heads?
The Ps will still give you the spark plug clearance issue on the driver side if you use headers... I think they flow better stock vs. stock...
if i ported both sets you think the gt40ps would be better than the cleavlands? and do you think the motor would still be ok after sitting out in the weather for 6 or 7 years?
and what cam, type pistons(not forged, too expensive), and how much bore and port for the block and heads do yall recomend? isnt the cleavland heads 4valve and the gt40p 2valve?
Clevelands when referred to 4V means that they have bigger valves an the ports are bigger, still only have 2 valves per cylinder. Unless you are going for a very stout race engine,,,4v cylinder heads are not the way to go. Need to find a good builder an tell them what you want an $$$ for project. Good Luck,,,PS, I think I would steer away from the $500 cleveland out in the weather for years
The 351 cleveland heads are not 4 valve heads. The cleveland heads are much racier heads than the p heads and the p heads wont bolt onto a cleveland anyway. Minimum bore, as little as possible and it;s possible it cant be saved if it's been in the weather for awhile.
is there anything like wd40 that could fix it if it isnt too bad, and are you talking about the inside being rusted, and what do you mean by seized
WD40 won't fix anything. Extensive rust inside the cylinders, seized pistons, rusted and seized valves. The engine would require a complete rebuild. A machine shop would have to determine what could be saved. Put a socket with a long breaker bar on the Harmonic Balancer bolt. If you can't turn it, it is seized. Based on what is required to put a Cleveland in a Maverick and your perceived skill level. I would stick with a 302 based engine.
its not going in my maverick, im keepin it all original, this is my first rebuild, im jus tring to learn what i can. i plan to get it bored and the heads ported and polished anyways. would that solve the seized and extensive rust problem? what do you mean by socket with long breaker bar? cause i would like to try that to find out if it is seized.
A socket and breaker bar are tools. The socket fits on the bolt in the center of the balancer. A breaker bar connected to the socket will allow you to attempt to turn the crankshaft in the engine. You can also use a big ratchet.
ok i knew what the socket was i jus never heard of a breaker bar. would borein the block and port and polishing the heads fix it if its seized? it has valve covers and mainfold and everything, its the whole motor.
