I'm trying to run a performer series 1406 carb, but at the factory calibration, I have a wicked lean miss situation. I bought the calibration kit and have tried various combinations as outlined in the owners manual, and while some get rid of the miss, I can't get the darn thing to idle at all, and if I'm lucky, maybe 500 rpm. I've tried about all I can think of, and when I get the 500rpm, if I kick it up with the idle speed screw, it actually kills the engine. I just don't get it, I'm thinking about going out and getting a demon. If anyone has a combination that works well, could you pass it along to me? I've just stepped up the jet to .101 and back to the stock rod and spring. I'm going to go back to the factory setting tomorrow, but if there are any tips or tricks, I'd greatly appreciate it

You won't like the demon, it is even harder to calibrate.

The 1406 should run fine right out of the box. Maybe you have one that is defective? The calibration kit is for fine tuning, so if it is dying on you, I think there is something serious wrong with it and fine tuning it won't help.

Is the fuel system good and are you getting the required 6-8psi fuel flow?

Go back to the stock setting and if it doesn't run, I would look at a rebuild kit or take it back if it is new.

Try plugging the vacuum hose from the distributer to the other side of where it is now on the carb.

I'm running mech. advance on the dist. all my lines are plugged. I just borrowed a vac gauge from my nieghbor, and tomorrow, I'm gonna see if he can bring his Snap On tuning computer over and get this thing figured out. It's just weird, I can get it idling, but if I wack the gas, it hesitates, revs up, and as soon as I let off, dies
    Thanks for the help guys

I agree...vacuum leak. I had this happen and it was kicking my but for 2 days. Found out that the vacuum line out the back to the transmission had popped off and it ran like crap.

I'm gonna tighten the intake back down tomorrow, other that, I have no where that I can see bad, 3 ports plugged in the front of the carb, both ports plugged in the back of the carb and intake, manual trans, so no leaks there, and gaskets are all new. Maybe the carb has a crack in the airhorn or something?
