Trying to replace my diff. I can't get the passenger side axle out. The driver's side came out OK. I've been using a long heavy chain bolted to the lug nuts and popping it like a whip. Forget about using the drum mounted backwards. I've used a little heat on the outside of the axle where the bearing fits in. I cut a piece of allthread and tried to push out the axle from the inside of the flange, it bent. I'm going nuts. Anyone have any ideas on how to pop out this stubborn axle. Your help is appreciated as always... Dave
If you have an Autozone close by see if the have a slide hammer type axle puller. They will loan it to you for free just have to leave a deposit.
I was wondering if they made a press or something for these. I tried using my body slide using a couple of clevises at no avail. If it was a little heavier, maybe. I guess I'm going to Oh-Zone.
On a old Ford truck rear I had to use a piece of pipe, just a tick smaller than the axle diameter, and drove the axle out with a heavy hammer from the opposite side. Of course this was on a 1.5 ton truck axle, it might not be possible with the 8".
Got 'Er Done Hurray, We had a bit of luck this weekk-end . Went to the Oh-Zone and rented the larger slide hammer(thanks for the sugestion). Now it took several very big blows and after a while I could see I was making a little progress. As it started coming out I was able to use lighter and lighter blows and she eased on out. Man, I' never thought it would be that tight. But it was, and with quite a bit of encouragement she came out. Next came out the pumpkin. It also took a little bit of encouragement. Cleaned up the housing, used some spray on high tack gasket stuff on both sides of the gasket and slid in the new center section. It actually went together nice and easy. New wheel bearings, brakes looked good. Now for the oil. The oil that came out was very very thick. Kind of like frozen Karo. I would encourage everyone to swap out the oil in your rear end if your driving around in your old original set-up. Mine at least was very dirty, very thick and lots of sludge. I wasn't sure of what kind of gear oil to use but I priced Royal Purple, it was kind of on the pricey side. The 90 weight gear lube was around the $4.00 to $5.00 dollar range, Then I found Mobil 1 synthetic. It was right at $7.00 bucks a quart. It took two. That's what I ended up using. So,... Has anyone used the Mobil 1 gear lube and how was your luck with it? Is the price of the Royal Purple really worth the extra bucks for heavy street and light racing usage. It's really only used on week-ends and right now is seeing very light usage, due to the body work being done on it. I have all the lights and stainless pulled off the car right now and just starting to get some decent weather to work on the car. Very close to getting the color sprayed on. Anyway, your comments on rear end lube is appreciated and your help on getting this thing apart was greatly appreciated. So, Thanks alot and get that oil changed out. Dave Those zero radious turns are cool!!!
My rear end guy says to use regular gear oil to break in new gears, run car 40-50 miles cool down completely do this 4-5 times then go to synthetic gear oil. Mobil one is a good oil, I would use what you feel good with. It's a price you only spend every 25-50,000 miles, so you be the judge. Mobil syn. works for mr! Be a good time to flush entire brake system. You would be surprised how dirty it gets! Good Luck
