You guys make it seem like DRUM vs. DISC is like night and day .... If I put either one of you guys in a 1974 Maverick and had you drive it around the block ... would you stake you life on the ability to tell whether it had disc or drum determined just by your driving experience?

I agree with Dan my 71 grabber and the 71 driver I sold both had very well working drums the cars stopped fine and straight. Then I also drove drum cars that were horrible but you have to know how to adjust them properly. Were the discs do it them self on the frt

Not everbody likes to just do normal driving. It matters about where you live, and how you live. What if your a speedhog? What if you happen to live in the hills? All that stuff changes. Around the block might not even get the brakes warm, so you can determine the difference. Lets do some autoxing or some mountain driving, then tell me the brakes are going to act the same.

You are arguing with yourself since none of what you are saying has been brought up before in this discusson ... of course discs are better for autocross driving and road racing ... The original topic of this thread was that drums have no stopping power.

With drum brakes, the "self adjusters" usually don't.

I had a bear of a time trying to get my front drums balanced out, but it wasn't happening, new shoes, springs, and rebuilt the cylinders, still nogo. Found a 77 parts car with discs, swapped them out, night and day difference, sorry

To be honest with you, the original topic of this thread, was that I wanted a real answer for what disc brakes I can swap these drums out to. I may have said my brakes don't have stopping power, but if you have some common sense, you'll see what the question really is.

I am doing the swap on my 70. I have everything done but ordering the new brake line from Earl's.
I used disc off a 74'. Bought new upper ball joints, new lower control arm assembly and new tie rod ends. (I was told that I needed a different tie rod end).
I guess mine was easy cause I just ordred everything for a 74' maverick.

Thank you. Hey T.L wana go grab a bite?:tiphat: Haha kidding. I'm pretty sure I will get along with a lot of others too. Drums suck, thats the end of it. Why waste your time "maintaining" it:bs: , when you can upgrade, and be more safe?

:) I have a 74 Maverick and a 74 Comet both of them had drum brakes, they now have rotors. I have been working on brakes for over 30 years. There is no comparison between the two. If someone is not happy with the way his car is stopping and has the means to change them,I will have them do it every time. It is not that expensive of a change if they are doing the work themself.
