1970 200 w/ automatic, changed torque converter because the ring gear had some bad spots on it ( worn teeth) now when bolted back up the engine will turn a little more than 3/4 of a turn them it gets stuck , have to turn it backwards to unstick it . If I loosen all the nuts and push back on the converter it spins all the way ,has anyone had this happen?
Yes only one and it's lined up , do you know what the name of the part is that the converter bolts to?
Mine doesn't look like that , my ring gear is welded to the converter, the washer looks the same though, and that is the way I have it
Yeah the 200 6 is totally different when it comes to the torque converter and ring gear. Hopefully you have the converter seated all the way in the transmission you should have three distinct notches that it clicks into when installed, usually you would not even be able to turn it when bolted up, is the transmission in neutral
If the converter wasn't in all the way would I be able to push it back from the plate it mounts to , because it pushes back easily
It spins so free then just all of a sudden it stops , no sign of hitting at least that I can see ,?im thinking maybe one of the weights on the converter hopefully when I take it out I can see , just hat to pull it out again not knowing the problem ,
I'd think either the drain plug or the studs/nuts are dragging... How do they compare with original??
It looks identical, but I didn't actually measure it , I put a dab of grease on the studs and spun it around and it didn't hit anything, the only way it will spin all the way is to take the 4 nuts off and push back on the converter, must be hitting the inside of the housing where I can't see , guess it's time to take it back out , hopefully I see something
Before you pull it apart, mark the converter so you'll know the position it was in when hitting... May or may not prove helpful... Also you can loosen the bell bolts a couple turns, pull the trans back a 1/8" or so to see if that helps(keep converter bolted to spider or whatever the coupler on back of crank is called)... If it no longer hits, problem is between converter and bellhousing...
It was the weight on top of the converter, I grinned some of it down (thru the starter opening ) till it spun free , the weight was almost 1/8 thick and about 2 inches long , I ground at least half of that away . I wonder if it will have a vibration? I was just happy to be able to spin it all the way , hopefully it will be OK
What is that weight meant for does anyone know , does it have something to do with the internal or X ternal balance of the engine, is the 200 internally balanced?
