I picked up a rear chunk this weekend and I'm wanting to install it this week. It's a 4:11 posi unit that I'll be putting into my car. My question is, what do I do, step by step to pull my current 3:00 and install this one? I'm not swapping the entire rear end, hub to hub, just the center section. Thank you for ANY advice and information!
check the autorestomod youtube channel. i believe they're covering this topic in the current episode!
Attached are step-by-step instructions for the Ford 9" or 8" carriers. No need to remove the axle bearing from the axle unless you are replacing it. I use two large screw drivers to pop out the axles. Don't forget the proper lube for Traction Lok. You should be able to borrow a seal installation tool from an Auto Zone or the like. Good luck!
You can also reverse your drums onto wheel studs, install 3 lug nuts until threads are flush with nut face and can be used as a slide hammer puller, axle/bearings usually come out pretty easy. As the axle/bearing starts to break loose, ease up as you don't want to have flying out at you and end up on your butt......only in the housing approx. 7/8" Good idea to place your rim/tire under the rocker panel rail, just for added safety if the car was to slip off the jack stands...... it is, after the first time... to me the the hardest part was getting the copper washers off the studs...they never went back on. the dope comes out when you break the chunk loose from the housing so be ready to catch it...some nasty stuff. as mentioned earlier...replace the axle seals.
It went great, all I had to do was pull my axle shafts and pull the old gear set out and stick the new setup in. Slid the shafts back in and I'm mobile again!
