Had a 71 Grabber in for a short time in 1988. 200 6 cylinder, Grabber Blue, a/c, C4, p/s, drum brakes. Sold to a friend of my dad's that said his wife needed a car. Which was a lie, he did a quick paint job and flipped it. Going to be looking at a few cars this weekend. Hoping to find a small bumper car to use as a driver/project in the next week or so. Hoping for a V8 car with a/c, but will settle for something solid and upgrade as time and money allow. Other than rust in the rockers, floors, etc. any problem areas to watch for? I know these cars aren't known for their steering and braking in stock form, but any issues that a novice needs to be aware off?
Check for rust in the cowls by dumping a bucket of water into the cowl grill and see if any of it ends up on the floor inside the car.
Thanks for the replies. I had an F100, didn't leak at the cowl, but it did leak around the windshield wipers and had to replace the rubber gaskets where the wiper shaft poked through the cowl. Do these cars have a similar design?
On A/C models, it's not an issue. Other members can chime in on this, but I've heard that on non-A/C models, it can leak through the vent if the rubber seal around the driver-side wiper is bad.
from Atlantic Canada! I would scour the cowl area with a fine-tooth comb. Even with a great looking, low-mileage car, a bad cowl can ruin your day--ask me how I know. http://mmb.maverick.to/threads/paul-massons-71-grabber.92251/ Good Luck with your search! That Grabber Blue 71 would have been a nice looking car!!
Many cars do have some rust, depending how close to the ocean, or if dirt is allowed to build up behind a trim piece or inside doors, fenders, etc then rust can be found. Or if a leaking cowl, windshield, etc lets water in, many have rust in the floor boards. But usually nothing like northeast, midwest parts of the country.
when you find something and need parts this is a good place to find them or you can contact me if youre within driving distance including the one I just got thursday Ive had 14 mavericks / comets
