So I'm giving in, I want to swap my 250i6 with a 302 (makes a little more sense as I'm not wealthy haha) how much and how hard is it to find a nice 302 that doesn't need rebuilt as soon as I get it? And as for everything else, I wanna put a T5 in It with it. How much roughly does it cost to swap the engines (including everything that you have to modify) and do the transmission swap from a c4? Mines a 75 4 door maverick 250i6
I would suggest you take baby steps. First...lets get the V-8 in there. You can probably find a decent used motor, and all the parts necessary to do the swap...for around $1000. The T-5 is going to be harder to do and more expensive as well.
You can do it pretty cheap if you hunt for the deals and aren't afraid to kill a vehicle for what you want from it. What are your plans for the 302, stock or modified? If you plan on staying stock you can pick up the T-5 from a V-6 Mustang cheap compared to the V8s and the late model units are comparable in strength to the Fox V8 transmissions. One of those would live a good long time behind a stock 302. It will take the larger flywheel which you can get from a full size truck. So far I am into my setup dirt cheap, I bought a rolled 94 Bronco for $300 that had 90k on the engine which ran great, scrapped the body and sold as much of the rest as I could and ended up $300 ahead in the end and my dad still got the new tires! I picked up the T-5 from a wrecked 98 Mustang with a V-6 for $150 with under 65k on it, I'll still pull it down and inspect it but the fluid was clean and everything feels smooth. I still need to get the flywheel and clutch as well as a hydraulic set up to actuate it all but that is way down the road.
Well my plans are for a mild street rod. Nothing that's gonna be running 10's or even drag racing for that matter. I just want something with a little more power, and from what I've seen and doNE research on, I'm gonna be spending a pretty penny on hopping up my i6. And with that money could have put a v8 in it. Would the C4 be able to handle the 302 well? I don't want to be blowing out my transmission if I can help it. And from my understanding the rear end gears will need to be changed?
Your c4 will be OK behind a mild 302, if it has a lot of miles on it I would recommend a rebuild with a shift kit. Regearing is not necessary, but is the best performance boost for the cost.
